-----------------------
This is a work by Kinsai Fujii, a leading master in the art of Arita ware.
It is a spherical flower vase painted entirely in *sometsuke* (blue-and-white underglaze), featuring gracefully leaping deer amidst a dense scattering of autumn leaves. The finely detailed maple motifs cover the entire surface, while the deer emerging within creates both dynamism and a sense of fantasy. The expressive brushwork, unique to hand painting, together with the deep indigo gradations of *sometsuke*, produces a scenery that never ceases to captivate the eye.
From the perspective of technique, this piece is executed in *sometsuke*. This method involves painting directly onto the bisque-fired body before the glaze is applied. The flowing brushstrokes and delicate touches characteristic of this technique evoke the refined world of traditional landscape painting. Because the absorbent surface of the bisque does not allow for corrections, each line must be drawn in a single decisive stroke. Patience, concentration, and compositional strength—all come together in the completion of this work.
Standing 15.8 cm tall, this compact vase is well-suited to modern living spaces, making it a popular choice. Its size also makes it an excellent gift item. A true masterpiece, it embodies the pinnacle of skill in wheel-throwing, painting, and firing.
