-----------------------
A uniquely fantastical beauty woven from gold, platinum, and iridescent foils?this ceramic framed artwork of Mt. Fuji is a masterpiece by Tatsuro Ono, renowned for his unparalleled originality within the world of Arita ware.

Ono’s signature technique involves both traditional glazing and the meticulous application of ultra-thin foils such as gold, silver, platinum, and iridescent foil. These color foils, created by hammering base metals hundreds of times until they are thinner than a breath, are then carefully applied by hand using natural lacquer as an adhesive. The work is fired at a low temperature of around 200°C to set the design. This demanding process requires immense patience and precision.

Since different colored foils cannot be applied simultaneously, each must be attached one at a time during the brief moment when the lacquer reaches the ideal semi-dry state. This intricate procedure calls for both refined skill and seasoned experience.

In this particular work, various foils?gold, silver, platinum, and iridescent?are layered delicately to depict the majestic form of Mt. Fuji. The shimmering sky, the hazy ridgelines, and the elegant curves of clouds and pines are all rendered with the soft luster and depth unique to foil decoration.

Each piece is entirely handmade and one-of-a-kind, offering a different visual impression depending on the lighting and time of day. This artwork is a harmonious fusion of traditional Japanese sensibility and refined elegance?ideal as a sophisticated interior accent, gift, or commemorative piece.

[Artist Profile]
Tatsuro Ono (Kozan Kiln)

[Message from the Artist]
At Kohzan Kiln, I have long been captivated by the brilliance of kinrande (gold-decorated ware). Over time, I began incorporating not only gold foil but also lesser-used materials such as platinum foil, jewel beetle (tamamushi) foil, blue shell foil, and iridescent foil. My goal is to "paint with foil" and bring out a beauty unlike any other. I hope to continue creating works that bring joy to many.

Porcelain production started in Japan in the 17th century after kaorin stone was discovered in Arita. From the middle 17th century, large amounts of Arita ceramics, which captivated the European royalty and nobility, were exported to Europe, through the Dutch trading post on Dejima Island in Nagasaki. Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, was so fond of Arita ceramics that he ordered porcelain resembling Arita ceramics to be made in his electorate. In Arita, the tradition and techniques of Arita ceramics have been preserved for over 400 years, while young potters and workshops take on the callenge of producing ambitious new works.

Sometsuke wares are made by drawing patterns with a blue pigment called GOSU, applying glaze over the surface, and firing the porcelain.   Hakuji wares are mede by applying transparent glaze over a white surface and firing the porcelain.   Akae, or Iroe, wares are painted in many colors, including red, the predominant color, green, yellow, and cobalt blue.
