A One-of-a-Kind Vision of Fantasy: The Iridescent Elegance of Gold, Platinum, and Color Foils.
This ceramic framed artwork of Mt. Fuji, created by master artisan Tatsuro Ono of Kohzan Kiln, exemplifies unparalleled originality in the world of Arita ware.
Ono’s hallmark lies in his use of haku ?ultra-thin metallic foils such as gold, platinum, silver, and iridescent foil?to create vivid visual expressions. These foils, painstakingly beaten and extended hundreds of times until thinner than breath, are carefully applied by hand using natural lacquer as an adhesive. Each foil must be affixed individually, requiring exceptional precision and experience, as the lacquer must reach a precise semi-dry state for proper adhesion. After application, the work is fired at a low temperature of around 200°C to set the design?making the process both time-consuming and highly intricate.
This particular piece showcases Mt. Fuji depicted entirely through layered gold, platinum, silver, and iridescent foils. The sunlit sky sparkles, the mountain ridges gently fade into the mist, and even the silhouettes of clouds and pine trees curve with grace?all rendered in the soft luster and depth unique to foil work.
Each piece is handmade and entirely unique, offering a different visual experience depending on the angle, time of day, or lighting. It is a superb work of art that blends traditional Japanese elegance with luxurious refinement?an exceptional choice for interior display, gifting, or commemorative occasions.

[Message from the Artist]
At Kohzan Kiln, I have long been captivated by the brilliance of kinrande (gold-decorated ware). Over time, I began incorporating not only gold foil but also lesser-used materials such as platinum foil, jewel beetle (tamamushi) foil, blue shell foil, and iridescent foil. My goal is to "paint with foil" and bring out a beauty unlike any other. I hope to continue creating works that bring joy to many.
