A Masterpiece by Fukuji Kitamura ? A Leading Figure in the Art of Arita Ware

This work was created by Fukuji Kitamura, a renowned overglaze painting artist and Traditional Craftsman who has long embodied the spirit of both tradition and innovation in Arita ware. Though now retired due to advanced age, his works continue to captivate viewers with their refined beauty.
Kitamura’s unique artistic style, honed through years of mastery and creative insight, is truly a timeless expression of ceramic excellence.

This gourd-shaped porcelain vase features an elegant akae (red overglaze) background, against which seasonal flowers and playful children (d?ji) are delicately depicted in white-reserved medallions. Peony, morning glory, maple, and plum?each representing a different season?encircle the body of the vase, accompanied by charming figures of children that bring each floral scene to life. Together, they form a gentle narrative of nature’s seasonal cycle, offering a sense of changing time with every glance.

The gourd shape, long regarded as an auspicious symbol of good health and prosperity, adds further significance to the piece. Though compact at approximately 23 cm in height and easy to display, the vase’s vivid red overglaze and meticulous painting lend it a commanding presence. A perfect choice as a decorative accent or a meaningful gift.
